n8n vs Zapier vs Make in 2026

Pick the platform for the outcome, not the brand. Here is how n8n, Zapier, and Make actually differ on cost, control, and when you should stop DIY and buy a fixed-price build.

We are a workflow automation agency. We build on n8n by default and still recommend Zapier or Make when they fit. Tool religion kills ROI.

Pricing model (the part that bites later)

Zapier charges per task. One step in a multi-step zap is one task. Volume and step count compound fast.

Make charges per operation and is usually cheaper than Zapier for equivalent volume, with a steeper learning curve.

n8n Cloud prices by workflow execution. Self-hosted n8n is hosting cost only. Step-heavy AI and ops workflows often land cheaper here at scale. Full agency vs DIY bands: how much workflow automation costs. Our own fixed-price tiers for whichever platform fits are on the pricing page.

Self-hosting and data control

If you need workflows and credentials on your infrastructure, n8n is the practical choice among the three. Zapier and Make are cloud SaaS. Regulated or data-sensitive teams care about this before they care about pretty UI. Full setup detail: n8n self-hosting guide.

Integrations and customization

Zapier wins on breadth of one-click app connectors. Make wins on visual complexity without code. n8n wins when you need custom logic, HTTP, code nodes, and systems that survive after the agency leaves. Templates vs custom: custom automation vs no-code templates.

Which one should you use?

  • Use Zapier if you need the fastest path to a working automation, a non-technical person will own it alone, you run fewer than a few thousand tasks a month, and app breadth matters more than cost at your volume.
  • Use Make if you want visual branching for moderately complex logic, your volume is high enough that Zapier's per-task pricing hurts, and your team can handle a steeper UI than Zapier's.
  • Use n8n if data has to stay on your infrastructure, volume is high enough that per-task or per-operation pricing no longer makes sense, the workflow needs custom logic no pre-built connector covers, or you want a system your team (or an agency) can hand over and you can keep running after they leave.

Real-world proof, not vendor slides

For Beamide, we deliberately did not reach for n8n — the outbound volume didn't justify a custom build, so we shipped it on Brevo's native automations instead. Result: 52.9% open rate into ESA and CERN, 2 qualified meetings from the first 40 sends, 50% qualified-conversation-to-deal.

That is the actual decision framework in practice: tool choice follows volume and ownership requirements, not brand preference. We default to n8n for owned, self-hosted systems and reach for Zapier or Make when the scope is genuinely simple enough that a heavier build would be waste. Outcomes, not connector counts, decide the platform.

FAQ

Is n8n better than Zapier?

For high-volume or self-hosted workflows, usually yes on cost and control. Zapier wins when you need the fastest happy-path integrations and a non-technical team will own the stack alone.

When should I use Make instead of Zapier?

When you want visual branching and lower per-operation cost than Zapier, and your team can handle a steeper UI. Make sits between Zapier ease and n8n power.

Can I self-host Zapier or Make?

No. Full self-hosting with workflow portability is an n8n strength. That matters for data control and predictable infrastructure cost.

Which platform do agencies like Zaps Studio use?

We default to n8n for owned systems. We still use Zapier or Make when they are the right fit for a scoped outcome.

How much do these platforms cost in 2026?

Zapier real business use often lands $70–$300/mo. Make is typically cheaper for equivalent volume. n8n Cloud starts around $20/mo; self-hosted is hosting cost only. Agency build pricing is separate — see our cost guide.

Which platform has the most integrations?

Zapier leads on raw connector count (7,000+ pre-built apps). Make covers most mainstream SaaS with more configuration per connection. n8n has fewer pre-built connectors but wins on HTTP/webhook/code-node flexibility, so it can reach almost anything with an API even without an official connector.
